If you are looking for more slap-knee humor, you are in for disappointment this week. I know, I know. The clever one-liners are essentially the reason most even bother to read the blog. I'll be honest and forthcoming with you, it's not that I have no creative juice left after last week's blog. And it's not that there isn't anything real funny to write about this week (although that is 100% true). The case is, this week there is something so much more important and serious to write about. Something that is earth shattering. Some news so prodigious that it makes the moon landing look like a weather report. What could it be you ask? What could be the earth shattering news? Well.....
Mesia's expecting!!!!
Ha, just kidding. There, there's your clever line for the week (Mesia thinks this is the worst joke ever, but I say it's all fun. And really, if we had such news, we would be calling you instead of waiting for a weekly blogpost :0)
Okay, so for real now, the great news of our little family is......
Dad got his law school class schedule this week! Ta da!
Ok, so I know some of you are curious the classes and how the whole thing works, so here we go...
No matter which school one goes to a first year law student (1L) has a mandated schedule in which the only variation is the days and times of classes along with the section you are assigned to. Each section is comprised of about 60 students. Each section has the exact same classes (days and times) throughout the first year. So I will be with the same 60 students for each class every day.
My group's schedule is: Mon. 2:45-4:00 Contracts
Tues. 10:45-12:00 Property
12:45-2:25 Legal Writing
2:45-4:00 Civil Procedure
Wed. 10:45-12:00 Torts
2:45-4:00 Contracts
Thurs. 10:45-12:00 Property
2:45-4:00 Civil Procedure
Fri 10:45-12:00 Torts
Ok, so I know some may be wondering what each class is about or entails, so a brief description:
Contracts is the study of contract law
Property goes through property description and obvious legalities regarding property and real estate
Legal Writing is the most intense single class which teaches how to do legal research and write briefs, memos, etc.
Civil Procedure is studying the procedure of the legal system, courts and court filings, etc.
Torts is the law governing when one party is damaged and sues another usually for damages.
Quite exciting huh? Yeah, only for those interested in it, but this is the latest in my life. For the past few months I've been home watching Sam, which has been great, but also very cumbersome. Now the countdown begins, 30 days and counting. Although I have the set class times, I will most likely be at school from 9:00am till 7:00 or 8:00pm. My schedule will turn into a full time job for the first year.
I do have the good fortune of having a friend in our ward, a recent graduate of Cleveland-Marshall, take me under his wing and give me the inside intel on my teachers, classes, and the best way to go about law school. He has been a huge help and has given me some very keen advice. So needless to say, although I know the level of commitment and intensity ahead of me, I am itching to get going.
Per the rest of the family; I can't remember if I mentioned in a previous post, but Mesia applied for a national leadership program within the VA. The LEAD program takes 20-25 applicants out of 460 (this year) and trains them in Washington D.C. at the VA central office for a couple weeks out of the fiscal year on leadership and other abilities. The group becomes a sort of "think tank" to solve and work on some of the more global problems facing the VA. The program is so prestigious, those who are selected may basically write their ticket in their careers. Well, Mesia had an interview as she was narrowed down to one of the final 50 applicants. Her interview was a video and teleconferenced interview with people from Washington D.C. and other field offices. To even be narrowed down to the final 50 and qualify to have an interview was a huge honor and accomplishment for her. If you ask her hows she feels it went, she will give you a natural answer, being 'it was alright, but there are things she wishes she would have said differently' and so on. I told her that every other applicant feels the exact same way and from what she told me about how it went, I think she did a great job. I will be surprised if she doesn't land a spot in the program. We will know in about 10 days. We are keeping our fingers crossed!
Alex is back in the swing of the same old summer day. The Utah trip is over. Nana's stay is over. Kini's stay is over. It's just back to normal here and getting ready for school which starts on the same day as mine--Aug 16. A few weeks ago we got the results of her Ohio year end school test. We are proud to say she scored a solid average score in every subject and scored above average in Math. We felt this was a fantastic accomplishment considering she was only in the Ohio curriculum for a couple months, which was a bit ahead of the Utah curriculum. We are excited to see what kind of scores she can pull with a solid year under her belt.
Sam got a little blow up pool for the backyard to play in on the days that we are unable to load up and go to the pool. Also, we are in the midst of looking for daycares. We thought we found one, but yesterday Mesia was told to check out a different daycare down the street a little way. So we will swing by there and see how it is and make a decision this week.
On a side note, I've been remiss at thanking Kate for helping Alex send the birthday cookies to Sam a few weeks ago. So a big thank you to her.
And our family wants to tell Miles how happy we are and proud we are of him. Well done brother.
We hope all is well with everyone.
Till next week,
Mesia's Right!! Not cool at all!!! You're lucky I kept reading to find out it was a joke instead of slamming my lap-top shut and refusing to have anything to do with either of you again!!!
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, thanks for the Thank You. Alex picked out the cookies, I just paid for them. =)
