Due to the very busy schedule we endured over the past 2 weeks or so, I've neglected our blog. Now, as I sit here on Friday evening, breaking from studying legal research and judicial opinions about people wrongfully terminated from their jobs, feeling the complete mental wear and tear accumulated from hundreds of pages of reading, feeling emotionally zapped and physically run down, simply wanting someone to vent the week to, I wonder...is anyone still out there???
Eh, I'm just being dramatic. I've learned this trait from living in a house full of girls. But seriously though, does anyone still tune into this bat-channel each week after the break of it's regularly scheduled programming? Well, even if our readership has dropped, it is still enjoyable to write--Mesia laughs at my jokes.
Much has happened over the past couple weeks. Let's fill you in, if you are still out there. A couple weeks ago we went on our cruise. This week school started. Things are good.
Well, we hope all is well with our remaining readers.
Till next time,
He he, okay okay. Yes, our vacation was fun and much needed before the rigors of school. Right now I don't have the mental capacity to write about it. So perhaps one week when we have nothing new to share we will post the blog of our trip. Currently, there are more exciting things to talk about.
Let's start with Mesia. She is really doing a bang-up job at work. Her LEAD program is starting. The program is requiring her to read certain books and fulfill certain assignments before she takes her first trip. She is scheduled to stay one week in St. Louis in the middle of September for LEAD orientation. After that, I believe she'll be flying to Muskogee to shadow her mentor for a week. Yes, she received news of who her mentor is. She is a higher-up at the Muskogee Regional Office. When Mesia gave me the 50-something bio's of all the mentors to choose from, this lady was my personal top choice for Mesia. I felt her personality would be very much in line with Mesia's. Her mentor is very community service oriented and involved in a great deal of philanthropic work. I figured, with Mesia's character of service and compassion for people, they would get along swell. As it turned out, they were indeed paired up for this program. I think she is in for a fantastic experience. We will of course keep you posted and up to date with her progress and happenings in the program.
Sam started daycare this week. She has actually done really well considering she has been with no one but me for every hour of every day over the past few months. Her first day was Tuesday this week. I dropped her off around 8:00 and she instantly switched to analytical mode, taking in all the kids, what they were doing, her surroundings etc. She only cried for about 15 minutes after I left her and then was fine the rest of the day. Same has been the story Wednesday and Thursday. She is napping fine, eating all her food, and interacting with the kids and teacher. Her happy, bubbly, cheerful, social, exciting, and interactive personality definitely comes from me--sia. (She's reading over my shoulder)
As for the author of this hallowed writ, I started school this week. Although it was orientation week, make no mistake, there was homework to do; textbooks and casebooks to be read and cases to be briefed. I had 2 classes start in the midst of the "Welcome to Law School" orientation speeches, lunch with faculty members and student advisors and the like. I started my Legal Writing and Contracts class. Legal Writing will be the most intensive class of the year, while the others will be focusing on concept, theory and practicality of the law and won't require much busy work like my writing class. Yes, yes, legal writing, it will soon be so deeply engrained in my head that I'm sure every now and then with this blog you may see weird legalese appear like demurrer, per curiam, ex delicto, certiorari, and exorbitant billing per hour. If they slip in, just skip over it. Or if you'd prefer you can get a copy of Black's Law Dictionary to look up the meaning of these legal terms. Maybe to help everyone, we'll just have Mesia start writing the blog. Anyway, back to the story; being a 1L (first year law student) is like being a freshman in high school, only on an intellectual level. You see, in high school the teachers took pity on the freshmen class and typically helped them through their social awkwardness in dealing with the rough and tough interactions with the upperclassman. Well, in law school the upperclassman treat the 1L's with a great deal of respect and admiration--always willing to help and encouraging us to seek them out; it's the teachers you have to watch out for! They alone make us feel intellectually awkward and naive, breaking us by challenging our suppositions as to the cases we read and our opinions of the legal concepts. But, it's all for the good of our minds right? I am happy with my teachers. And I do have a TON of work, but it's what I expected. So, I survived week 1. I've learned how to brief a case, research precedents (previous adjudicated cases) and that when you sign your name to a document you better know EXACTLY what you are signing to.
But the first week hasn't been all rigor. I've met a few new friends and I'm sure over the course of the next few months I will meet many more. Being in the trenches together creates a pretty strong bond, as I've heard that the relationships you form in law school will be some of the best of your life. I've already had someone help me jump the car! Friendship. Priceless. The other great thing about being a 1L is that our egos can now understandably get in the way of our dealings with people. Yes, we can now think we are always right on things! Although we may not be right, we can sure argue that we are :0)....It makes for a happy home. :0)
Alex has been a trooper in this whole transition. She is left at home during the day because school doesn't start for her until this upcoming Thursday. Poor kid. I took her to a movie today to spend some time with her and get her out of the house. The movie was lame, but the time together was great. But she does start on Thursday, so everyone be sure to follow up with her on facebook or something to see how it went.
We hope everyone had a good week (if there's anyone who is still out there). And remember, if an employer fires you after you refuse to engage in unlawful conduct, you do have the right to redress.
Trust me on this....I'm a 1L!
